PRESS RELEASE - Time to act! : Let’s save our 33,000 km of trails!
Terrebonne, February 19th, 2021 – The Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec (FCMQ) wishes to support its 198 clubs and 4,500 volunteers who suffer numerous losses of land-use permissions, in addition to farmers who lose income in the face of delinquent behaviour. Our interconnected network of 33,000 km of trails is in jeopardy.
Each off-trail excursion affects farmers' income. These same farmers who graciously grant us land-use permissions on their land, but who also help to feed us.
In order to show them our gratitude and our support in the face of this unfortunate situation, and if we want to maintain the sustainability of our activity, we must be respectful of our environment. Snowmobiling is increasingly singled out by the general population due to delinquent behaviour that affects different spheres of activity: cross-country skiing, trapping, etc. The impacts are at the provincial level as well as at the level of fauna or flora, the population and private lands.
We must take it upon ourselves to act together to counter this present burden on the activity of snowmobiling.
We, therefore, ask all snowmobilers to raise awareness, inform and educate their colleagues and do their part by adopting safe and responsible behaviour.
Together, with a collective effort, we will make a difference in this regrettable situation and will thus be able to bring the delinquent snowmobiler around to the cause
Increased awareness
The FCMQ's mandate is to increase awareness of the adoption of safe and responsible behaviours among snowmobilers. To accomplish this, trail wardens will ensure, and verify when they go out, that respect for private land is exercised. Being able to count on the enhancement of their role with the overhaul of the OHV law, provincial trail wardens can now go to the location where off-road vehicles are operating, or are immobilised, thus allowing better enforcement of the law.
